DSTV Bouquet Prices Increment: A Matter of Do or Die..

DSTV Nigeria, the popular satellite TV service owned by MultiChoice, offering different subscription packages with various channels for sports, entertainment, news, and many more, is in the news again. DSTV Nigeria has increased the prices of DSTV and GOTV packages for the second year in a row, sparking backlash from subscribers, regulators, and most importantly, the Government.

Amid the criticism, Nigeria has been faced with economic instability during the same period of the increment by MultiChoice Nigeria. Although many households in Nigeria rely on the services DSTV Nigeria, as they definitely remain the sole provider of quality satellite TV services in Nigeria. According to the company’s financial results for the year ended March 31, 2024, MultiChoice reported 18% decline in Nigeria, bringing the RoA’s total active subscribers down by 13% to 8.1 million from 9.3 million in 2023.

Again, MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, recently increased subscription prices across all packages, effective from March 1, 2025. This adjustment, the second in less than a year, is attributed to rising operational costs.

Here is a table summarizing the subscription price changes for DStv Nigeria’s packages over the past five years:

Note: The 2025 prices reflect the increase effective from March 1, 2025.

From the figure above, the graph shows the comparison of DSTV Premium packages vis-à-vis dollar exchange rates for the past five years, the price increment over the past 5 years is influenced by factors including operational costs and economic conditions, evidently and largely due to the exchange rate. For instance, the recent hike in 2025 has been attributed to rising operational expenses. From the graph, naira devaluation in the year 2023 resulted in sharp changes in the prices of the DSTV packages with corresponding percentage changes, resulting in the convergence of the graph lines.

Subsequently, comparison of DSTV premium bouquet rate across three countries in Africa; Ghana, South Africa, and Gambia, indicates Nigeria still has the cheapest DSTV premium packages among these countries, with $28.62 in the year 2025 in Nigeria as against $63.67 in Ghana, $58.60 in South Africa and $63.33 in Gambia.

However, these trends indicate DSTV Nigeria reacted to external business conditions to provide support to meet up its operational obligations. Recent price increments are a necessity for the company, and therefore every tendency that possible top-ups on the bouquet prices could still happen when considering the Dstv price trends in other parts of Africa.
